This That & The Other Thing

I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying the recipe sharing. I love to cook, and while I don't claim to be the worlds best (or even close) I have been cooking for a looong time and so I think I've figured a few things out along the way. In high school, like any teenage girl, I fought with my Mom a whole lot, but the one thing we could do without arguing was cook. So we would. Tacos, soup, cakes, whatever it was, we could co-exist in the kitchen with each other. Those are some good memories :-) I think I'll pick up next week, where we can discuss Spicy Southern Shrimp (healthy, delicious and fast), Sweet Potato Sticks (healthy and delicious), Veggie Drawer Chicken Soup (chock full of veggies and flavor), and Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread (mmmmmmm). That said if anyone has any requests (although I'm afraid I do not have a sure-fire praline recipe....) or any successes (or disasters) with any of my recipes, be sure to share. And if anyone has a plan for sneaking into Anonymous Hottie's Mother's Kitchen (also known as aMOManyous) to steal her rum cake recipe let me know. That recipe is necessary for my life & soul.

But in the meantime lets get back to what I do best: discussing inane things you might or might not care about.

I've sent some emails to firms that I know are looking for a new associate. I've heard nothing back. It is like the Great-One-Way-Job-Search of 2008. I was raised that communication is important. I send thank-you notes for every gift I ever receive (ok I'm a smidge behind right now with graduation+birthday at the same time, but I'm working on catching up I swear), I return voicemails and emails, and generally if you try to communicate with me I'm going to try and get back to you. And? If I send you my resume and cover letter in the form you have requested it then I think it is polite to respond to me, acknowledging receipt of it. That way when I make the courteous follow-up phone call I don't have to mention that "I hadn't heard back yet so I just wanted to ensure you had received it." I'd much rather make a follow-up call to simply touch base and ensure that there weren't any further documents/references/writing samples I could provide. For a "professional" profession I feel like some people sure aren't professional....

Which leads me to dress code in the court house. I have noticed a great number of women at the local county courthouse (which in Chicago is actually a fairly big-potatoes courthouse) who have decided that professional dress is optional. I think that any setting that requires a man to wear a suit and tie requires equally formal attire from a woman. Therefore flip flops and flowy skirt and a cardigan do not meet the requirements. Blazers, structured clothing, proper foot attire (heels or proper flats with backs and such) are appropriate. Shirt dresses from JCrew, while adorable for a weekend BBQ are simply not ok in the courthouse. I get so frustrated when as a woman I fight for fair and equal treatment in a professional setting and women show up to court like that. No wonder all the female judges are so ornery all the time...........

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming of how awesome Bar/Bri is. On second thought, I'll spare you the whining for today. But seriously? Mr. Evidence Man? Could you have gone any slower? I think not.
