Split Decision.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Well, the election is finally over. At about 8:00 tonight Katie and I popped the Champagne to celebrate the election of Barak Obama. I don’t think Katie or I have ever been so happy about an election result.

Then we waited. The California Proposition results started coming in. The Animal Cruelty Prohibition passed. That was good.

As of right now, with 95% of the results in, Prop 4 (parental notification for abortion of minors) is narrowly failing (hooray). But, Proposition H8te (writing gender-based discrimination into the California Constitution) is also narrowly passing.

#1 HOW THE HELL CAN CALIFORNIA CHANGE ITS CONSTITUTION WITH A BARE MAJORITY?!?!?!
#2 Can we change that? Ya know, like two-thirds to change our Constitution?
#3 Can we put Anti-Prop 8 on the ballot next year and repeal it?
#4 Who wants to hire me to start working on Anti-Prop 8 litigation. Proposition H8te is clearly unconstitutional.

Why do I say that? Because with President Barak Obama, I feel secure in the direction our Supreme Court will likely take. I feel that gay rights will be the new Civil Rights movement of our time. And I’m ok with that. I really wish that the people of California hadn’t voted hate into our Constitution. But I take heart in knowing that the trend is towards acceptance and tolerance. I firmly believe that within the next decade, gender-blind marriage will be the norm. At least I hope so.
