New Jersey v. Delaware

ADVERTISEMENTS

Our pops is from Trenton, too. This is the first time we've felt proud of that fact. The Supreme Court barely managed to stop an imminent invasion of New Jersey by Delaware.  In a 6-2 decision the Court said Delaware can block a LNG plant that was going to be built on the Jersey side of the Delaware River.  This case is far more awesome than it sounds.  For starters, Justices Alito and Scalia were the only dissenters in the case.  They were both born in Trenton.

Second, the craziest legislators in both states actually made plans for war.  The Delaware Legislature considered legislation that would have allowed the National Guard to prevent construction.  One New Jersey legislator explored how quickly the state could outfit the decommissioned New Jersey battleship to repel any sort of Delaware invasion.  This is the same Delaware River that Gen. Washington crossed to suprise the Hessians while posing for a portrait, so it's totally possible this could have really happened.  State politics are awesome!  Stupid Supreme Court ruined everything.
