Girls 2, boys 0

ADVERTISEMENTS
It's college interview season. I had four interviews to schedule, two with girls and two with boys. I'm always interested to hear the reaction when I first call up -- is it excitement, trepidation, or "I already filled out the stupid applications, is this lady STILL trying to make me think about college?"

The two girls I called were enthusiastic and polite. One emailed me afterward to say she was looking forward to the interview.

The first boy's father sounded excited when I told him why I was calling, but after some shuffling and grumbling on the other end of the line, the father eventually came back and said, "Apparently, he's taking a nap." Well, okay. Maybe he's sick or something. Haven't gotten a call back from that one yet.

The other boy, whose little brother informed me he was busy, called me back earlier. "Is Mr. CM there?" he asked. "No, can I take a message?" "I'm calling about my interview." "I called you," I said. "I'm having trouble hearing you." "What?" "I'm having trouble hearing you. There's a lot of background noise." "Oh. Yeah. I'm on the bus." "Could you call me when you get home?" "Okay." Click. No call back yet.

Not a great way to make a first impression, boys. No wonder girls are getting into college at higher rates.

Update: Boy #1 showed up a couple of minutes late. Girl #1 stood me up! (Then called later to apologize, at least.)
