Field Report: Obama in Albuquerque

By wt

ADVERTISEMENTS
As readers know, EU is dedicated to sending its blogstars around the country to file reports on the 2008 presidential races. Glanko's Michigan report is here.

Now we have FT's report on Obama's Albuquerque rally 2 days ago:

Either the Obama camp needs more confidence, or it needs to improve its crowd-estimation skills.

As [my son] and I drove towards the convention center, we noticed that the line to get in already filed two blocks up second street, west for three blocks, and then south for another two.

Even though I didn't think we'd get in, we parked and went to search the line for friends. Luckily we found some, and cut in with them. I donned my "Chicks dig Obama" button and we moved towards the door.

All of a sudden the line surged forward, and I realized that we weren't going to make it in to the main event. We were herded into an overflow room where there were two huge screens, and hundreds of people wondering if Obama was going to show.

He did. At around 1:10, Obama came in and the crowd erupted. It must be such a rush to have that many people screaming your name. He stood on the stage, and [my son] and I jumped up on a table so that we could get a better view.

All we could see was his head. He didn't have a lot to say--he apologized for not having enough space, told the New Mexicans how important they were to winning the race, and said he would shake as many hands as he could.

[My son] and I took a seat in the back to wait for the main event (an economic forum) to get started. I wish I could report on what was said at the forum, but shortly after Obama left the overflow room, we'd had enough, and took off.

Thanks FT. Looks like Obama has huge crowds in a lot of places he goes. I wonder if that's a good sign for his electoral chances in New Mexico and elsewhere.
