Dear Banana Republic

ADVERTISEMENTS
To Whom it May Concern:

I realize that fashion has long been driven by what is on the runway, and that the models on the runway are really nothing more than skeletons covered with skin. However, I think that it is crap that in this day and age, size 00 models continue to grace the covers on every major magazine in the country, giving young girls unrealistic expectations about what the acceptable body looks like. But I decided a long time ago that I wasn't going to let those unrealistic and dellusional expectations dictate how I should live my life. I'm not going to crash diet or work out for insane amounts of time to try to attain a body that I will never have. I have curves, and frankly I like them, so I'm certainly not making any apologies. But does the fact that I enjoy eating 3 meals a day, and don't make it to the gym every day, and actually have HIPS like most normal women, mean that I shouldn't be able to wear fashionable clothes??

Apparently the designers at your esteemed clothing company seem to think that only women who are toothpick shaped should be able to wear your fashionable clothes. Over the last year I've noticed that your pants aren't fitting quite right any more. Funny thing is, the older pants I have from your store fit fine, so I know that it's not me that's gotten fat, it's just that your pants have somehow managed to get skinner. Sure enough, I decided to check the online size chart the other day, and I'll be damned if I didn't discover that your pants HAVE in fact gotten smaller, almost a whole 1.5 inches on most of the measurements.

But that's not what I'm most irritated about.

The icing on the cake is what I found on your website this evening while doing some shopping during my horribly boring Administrative Law class. Right there on the front page of the women's section was this lovely (exciting!) announcement:

Wait a minute, does the website really say that they are now offering an EXTRA EXTRA SMALL??

Oh HOORAY! I'm absolutely thrilled to find out that Banana Republic, a store that screams "if we're having a sale the only sizes we have in the entire store are smalls and extra smalls," is going add a new EVEN SMALLER size to their online line up!! I just can't WAIT. It must be so great for all of the 8 year old girls out there who were dying to wear a $70 button down blouse from Banana for their 4th grade book report presentation to finally be able to get something in their size!

I hope those 8 year olds provide tons of new revenue for you, cause this curvy girl is done. Screw you Banana Republic, your clothes are overpriced and not nearly cute enough to justify switching to a non-fat sugar free vanilla latte.

Sincerely,

Useless Dicta
