The Belly Of The Blue Book Beast.

By Steve Pirates

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today is my first day manning a desk at Law Review working on editing a comment for publication. It’s a bizarre feeling. When I applied to law school, I had no idea what Law Review was, just that it was a good thing. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still think Law Review is a good thing, it’s just an odd and abstract appendage to Law School.

Law review reminds me very much of how general grad school is, especially those working on theses. The process of textually editing the work of a more learned legal scholar seems a bit presumptuous and rude to me, but as any grad student knows… learned scholars are often “big picture” sort of people, unconcerned with the niceties of grammar and citation. So, in we go with grammar and punctuation.

And then there’s Blue Booking. If there’s on reason I’m glad I don’t go to Harvard or Columbia etc, it’s that I can safely disclaim any responsibility for the unwieldy and frustratingly organized mass of outdated rules that is the Blue Book.
