Baby Becca: Month 3

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

Dear Becca,

On Tuesday you turned 3 months old, and I'm almost afraid to describe how wonderful you've been lately for fear that you won't do it any more. Frankly, you're one easy baby - given that you are still a baby who poops and cries and drools spit-up into your hair minutes after taking a bath. You nurse great, haven't gotten sick or diaper rash yet, and are generally a joy to cuddle. You and I have been having some good times - reading books in the morning, laughing at ourselves in the mirror, and meeting new people at school.

This month has seen a lot of changes for us. You finally grew out of your very last newborn-sized item of clothing, a pair of pink PJs with sheep that your Daddy was very fond of. I had to go buy a 6 month size of the same ones so he wouldn't go into a deep depression about it. More importantly, you've just grown out of your cradle, which has been hard for me. I got so used to having you a foot away from me every night, putting out a hand to rock you without really waking up, and rolling over in the morning to see my swaddled burrito baby waking up too. You'd see my face and break into a big baby smile - it's about as good as a wake-up can get.

But you were just getting too big, so I started putting you to bed in your crib instead. I thought you'd have trouble with it, but you've been sleeping like a log - it's me who had a couple of restless nights because my body knew you weren't there somehow. We're doing much better now. I even tried putting you to bed unswaddled this weekend, expecting the experiment to fail - instead, you flung your arms above your head and slept for 6 hours. What a girl!

The best part, though, is that you still wake up quietly and happy to meet the day - and when Daddy and I go to visit you, you've still got that big baby smile for us. It's the sweetest part of my day, the three of us starting the day off like that. I can't wait to see how you greet the changes ahead of you this month.

Love,
Mommy
