Advice for a 1L- interest groups

By Tyler Larsen

ADVERTISEMENTS
A 1L has a lot of information thrown at them in a hurry that first month of school. It seems like I am receiving fifty emails a day from different interest groups, faculty, and students. Interest groups are abundant at this law school.

My advice is find out which interest groups have ties to the legal and business communities where the school is located. It's important to network and learn what the buzzwords are in the community where you will practice. Involvement in these groups can help you create meaningful contacts for when it comes time to find a job. Interest groups help people create a group of friends for the three years of law school. If you have moved from out of state these groups can become a support group.

Don't become involved in all the interest groups. Pick a few to be a member in. Then pick one in which you will be an active member. (i.e. officer or committee member) I am a due paying member of a few groups. I'm interested in corporate law so I joined that group. I'm also a due paying member of the American Bar Association. I picked the Student Bar Association for my active group. I'm the 1L class vice-president.

In all groups can be a good thing but these groups can be a problem for a 1L. Don't become too involved that your studies suffer. Have fun! It might be tough and scary studying law. Hold on to tight, and you might lose your edge!(Top Gun)
