4th Of July For Lawyers

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
For most the country the fourth of July means barbeque's and hotdogs and fireworks and sunburns. For the unlucky few taking the bar exam, it is The Weekend. The Weekend that you have to stop screwing around (if you haven't been taking it all that seriously) or the weekend that you have your nervous breakdown (because you've been taking it way too seriously) and suddenly it hits you. You are taking the bar exam THIS MONTH and yeah, you still don't understand the Rule Against Perpetuities. (Don't worry. None of us do.)

So what nuggets of wisdom do I have? Not much other than now is the time to tuck your head in, tell the rest of the world that you are busy and will re-emerge in August, and get it done. Study, study and study. Order food in or eat frozen pizza and try to find a kind soul to do your laundry. Get some rest, continue to take some "you time" whether it is for a bike ride, a round of golf, an hour of yoga or a quick dinner out with a friend who doesn't want to talk about collateral estoppel or negotiable instruments. Plan something fabulous to do after the bar exam because the truth of the matter is, you need something to look forward to. I went back to BPLF a mere five days later and in reality, I could have given myself a longer break. Live & learn I suppose.

The one thing that you really, really shouldn't do is freak out. Don't do the math to figure out that you can't pass given how many questions you go wrong on your practice exam (mathematically based on my practice exam I couldn't come remotely close to the bottom rung of failing, but yet, I passed....) Don't stay up at night thinking about all the things you don't know. Don't beat yourself up for getting a question wrong, and most of all, don't torture your friends with your thoughts of doom and gloom. They have the same ones, and frankly, they don't need your special brand of "what if" to add to their mix, just like you don't need theirs.

Relax. Breathe. Study. The world will be waiting for you on the other side. Hopefully with an ice cold cocktail and a warm blanket.
