Pro-Life Group Criticizes Doughnut Maker

By Kevin Underhill

ADVERTISEMENTS

The American Life League, an anti-abortion/pro-life group, objected in January to a promotion that doughnut maker Krispy Kreme ran for Inauguration Day.  The company had offered customers one free doughnut on January 20th, a donation it said was intended to honor Americans' "sense of pride and freedom of choice."  This was unacceptable, apparently -- not because doughnuts themselves are a problem, but because the company used a forbidden word.

"The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America," League president Judie Brown said in a statement, "is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access, and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand."  This appeared in a press release titled "Krispy Kreme Celebrates Obama With Pro-Abortion Doughnuts."

Brown's statement continued, "We challenge Krispy Kreme doughnuts to reaffirm their commitment to true freedom ? to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ? and to separate themselves and their doughnuts from our great American shame."

For the record, the company has denied any connection between its doughnuts and abortion or any other "social or political issue."
