US Election Results: World Have Your Say

By Ryan Singel, Kevin Poulsen, Sarah Lai Stirland, Kim Zetter, and David Kravets

ADVERTISEMENTS

As jubilant as citizens of the world were over America's election of Barack Obama, much of the joy came from the prospect of the end of the Bush administration.

It's hard to express the scope and depth of President Bush's unpopularity outside of the United States, but a glance at newspaper editorials around the world helps to tell the story.

The editorial that wins the prize for being the most blunt comes from Russia's Pravda , which offered the following:

Only Satan would have been worse than the Bush regime. Therefore it could be argued that the new administration in the USA could never be worse than the one which divorced the hearts and minds of Americans from their brothers in the international community, which appalled the rest of the world with shock and awe tactics that included concentration camps, torture, mass murder and utter disrespect for international law. Yet in choosing Obama, the people of America have opted to come back into the international fold. Welcome back, friends!

Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Telegraph in Britain calls Obama's election victory a watershed moment that "marks a rite of passage" for the United States, but warns that Western allies worry that he could be an "isolationist and protectionist president."

Nevertheless, the editorial's writers note that Obama "could transform America's view of itself and the world's view of America, which has rarely been more reviled."

For our international readers: What did your local news outlets, politicians and community leaders have to say about America's choice of Obama as the 44th presdient of the United States?

Don't forget to provide us with the outlet's web address, if there is one. Under the "media tab" you can also add photos, audio or YouTube videos. Have fun!
