Child Support Arrears and Passports

By James Chau (all)

The associated press is reporting that.

In another method the US government is employing to get parents to pay child support, the US government is now refusing anyone with over $2,500 in child support arrears from receiving a passport.

This seems to be an effective way to get people to pay their child support obligations. If I've learned anything in my practice as a san jose family lawyer, it is that one should never try to evade payment of child support. The public policy is so strong in favor of parents paying their child support, that almost every governmental means available will be utilized to stimulate parents to pay up.

I get clients who come into my office, looking for a San Jose Child Support Attorney, with serious arrears and ask about how they can pay them off. I always advice my clients that it is never a good idea to stop paying child support without court permission to do so. Never a good idea to not support children.
