legal ethics odds and ends (June 14, 2010)

ADVERTISEMENTS
The US Supreme Court's recent decision, Padilla v. Kentucky, focused our attention on a lawyer's need to counsel a client on the collateral consequences of a conviction, at least in some situtations.  Richard Cassidy, at On Lawyering, looks at the complexity and disarray of the law of collateral consequences, and he urges reform.       . . . . .       Although this news article doesn't quite deal with legal ethics, this professor of counseling at Rider brings his extraordinary personal experience to bear as he teaches the ethics of dealing with other human beings in times of conflict.       . . . . .       At Balkinization, Brian Tamanaha asks law professors to "wake up" about the effect of "casualties" of the law school enterprise.  The ABA has a roundtable on a similar topic (how to reduce the risk that law school student take), and at Concurring Opinions David Hoffman asks why the US News & World Report continues to flourish despite its imperfections.  (imho, because what the magazine does is more important than the logical consistency of its data).       . . . . .     Unfortunately this article by the Recorder, about the nomination of Jim Towery as Chief Trial Counsel of the State Bar of California, is under a pay-wall, but the article notes that "In his new job, Towery will oversee 250 attorneys, investigators and support staff in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. The office has an annual budget of about $40 million."       . . . . .       Another article under a pay-wall suggests that justices on the Supreme Court of California are having recusal problems even though they've been trying to divest themselves of stock ownerships that are causing the recusals.       . . . . .
