Thad’s recent post brought to mind a few snafus that occurred in Oregon after the last redistricting cycle. The situation here was a bit different–we had a state legislator who was not in his district because the street address of the parcel was different from the physical (geo coded) location of the house. Apparently, it is the location of the house that matters for residency purposes. Thus, the Utah situation is not unique.

The solution here is to link redistricting systems more directly to live time boundary changes implemented by counties, assessors, and where possible, Census lines. We’re a lot closer this redistricting cycle, but not quite there yet.
