$1 Million Settlement in Illinois Nursing Home Case

The relatives of a woman who died after repeatedly falling at the county-run nursing home in Libertyville, Illinois will receive $1 million under a finalized settlement. The case was settled out of court after mediation after the 2005 death of 83-year-old. The woman was admitted to Winchester House in January 2004 suffering form dementia. She then fell several times over the course of the year. She suffered a brain injury and broken bones. A final fall in December 2004 required the woman to have surgery and she died in January of 2005. After the woman died, the nursing home instituted new policies requiring staff to more frequently check patient?s wheelchair and bed alarms to ensure they?re working properly.
