A new report from our friends at the National Education Association highlights the unique issues that face gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender students in our schools. The 90-page study called ?Stepping Out of the Closet, Into the Light? showed that GLBT students are at a higher risk of truancy, low academic achievement, or dropping out due to bullying than their straight peers. The report even offers steps that school administrators can take to reach out to these students.  BoardBuzz encourages readers to check out this compelling portrait of GLBT students nationwide.

For more information on this important issue, check out NSBA?s publication ?Dealing with Legal Matters Surrounding Students? Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.? This document provides administrators with valuable advice on GLBT-related issues that frequently arises in schools, including dress codes, student groups, and bullying.  By addressing these sometimes tough issues head on, districts can make sure that each and every student has the opportunity to focus on learning!
