We have two weekend editorials addressing different capital issues. "Time is right for a freeze on Texas executions," is the Dallas Morning News editorial from the Saturday edition. The state of Illinois has taken on the difficult questions more appropriately, a process that began more than 10 years ago after journalists and university volunteers unearthed unnerving evidence of innocent men on death row. Then-Gov. George Ryan responded by imposing a moratorium on executions, saying, ?We don?t want to kill innocent people, and we almost did in Illinois.? The governor followed up by appointing a commission to study inequities and forensic flaws in capital prosecutions.
