This has been an absurdly busy spring, so I have written about new scholarship much less than I would have liked. But ... yesterday's mail brought a brilliant new book, Donna Dennis' Licentious Gotham: Erotic Publishing and Its Prosecution in Nineteenth-Century New York. Really great sources; it makes significant contributions to history of the book as well as the history of crime and free speech.
And you know what? It's reviewed in the New York Post--that's probably a first for a serious work of legal history!
This summer when you have some free time and want a riveting read, check this out.
