Bill on Supreme Court Recusal Eyed

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

Rep. Christopher Murray, a Connecticut Democrat, said he is preparing to introduce legislation that would require Supreme Court justices to disclose why they recused themselves from hearing a case.

His bill also would require the high court to set up a plan that would allow parties to a case to  “request the court to decide whether a particular justice has a conflict of interest,” according to an article in The Hill newspaper.

The disqualification issue at the high court was recently raised by Common Cause, an advocacy group. It questioned  whether Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas should have stepped aside in voting on the Supreme Court?s landmark Citizens United case (see Gavel Grab).
