: Food Safety NewsTexas Taffy Pet Treats May Have Salmonella
By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck
Merrick Pet Care said it made the decision to recall all Junior Texas Taffy pet treats out of an "abundance of caution."
The treats being recalled have an item number of 27077 and a UPC number 02280827077, all lots up to and including 10364 are being recalled. The Junior Texas Taffy was shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the United States.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk of Salmonella infection to humans who handle contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Consumers who have these products should dispose of them safely by securing them in a covered trash receptacle.
Consumers who have purchased the Junior Texas Taffy are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-664-7387 M-F 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CST.
