Florida?s Middle District is second only to the district including Los Angeles in bankruptcy filings. One bankruptcy is filed for every 100 residents of the Florida district that includes Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa. This same geographic area has a large and growing hispanic population, and the Clerk of Court is focussed on meeting the needs of it’s Spanish-speaking citizens.

For many years, Florida lawyers, including my firm, have offered bilingual services to the hispanic community, but a definite need exists to provide basic legal information via the internet.

This week, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida took a huge step in the right direction, launching a Spanish version of its very comprehensive website. The MDFL’s website is chock full of valuable bankruptcy information for consumers, important announcements for lawyers, and up-to-date links to court dockets. Now, much of this is available to the Spanish-only community.

The MDFL Clerk even offers a fantastic video on bankruptcy basics for consumers which has been translated into Spanish and Creole.

In its announcement, the Clerk of Court said, “We are working on reaching out to the Spanish speaking community and this is the first step in offering the same information available to the public.”
