The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that about 198,000 GE and Professional Series Dehumidifiers are being recalled because they are a fire hazard.

Affected by the recall are 30-pint and 40-pint white portable dehumidifiers with digital controls and a front loading water bucket. Consumers may have bought one of these dehumidifiers for between $140 and $180 at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Menards or other retail store across the United States from February 2007 to June 2009.

Consumers can use the Product Verification website or identify the recalled dehumidifiers by the following model and serial numbers located on the back of the unit:

Dehumidifiers are an appliance used to reduce the level of humidity in the air.

These recalled products were manufactured by GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment Ltd in China, the GE brand dehumidifier imported by GE subsidiary GEA Products L.P. of Louisville, KY and the Professional Series brand dehumidifier imported by CEM Global LLC of China.

Consumers have reported 14 incidences of smoke and fumes and 8 reports of fire due to these dehumidifiers. In six cases, the fires extended beyond the unit and caused property damage.

GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment advised that consumers should stop using these dehumidifiers immediately and call (877) 593-8721 for instructions on how to return their product to an authorized service center for a free repair. They should not return the affected unit to the retailer.
