Did You Remember To Be Thankful For Political Scientists?

ADVERTISEMENTS

I hope you remembered on Thursday to include political scientists on the list of the items and institutions we all have to be thankful for.

True, we didn?t really need Prof. James Oberlander, a political scientist at the University of North Carolina, to inform us in the New England Journal of Medicine that criticisms of Obamacare as ?a government takeover of health care? are ?incendiary ... false and misleading.? We?ve heard both sides of that argument all over the place already and can make up our own minds about it.

But Prof. Oberlander analysis goes far deeper than such partisan opinions. In that same article, for example, as noted in today?s New York Times, he also pointed out that any court rulings holding the new law unconstitutional ?could add to health care reform?s legitimacy problem.?

Really? Now that I?m not sure we could have figured out on our own. Thank goodness for political scientists.
