Why Didn't I Think of This Angle for my Paper?

By Useless Dicta

ADVERTISEMENTS
It's been awhile since I posted links to a news story or editorial, but an opinion piece in the NY Times this morning caught my attention and I thought I would share it with you all:

Taking Marriage Private

I found this article interesting because my Jurisprudence class this semester has used the issue of Gay Marriage as a basis for studying the different legal philosophies that have impacted the American legal system. Throughout the semester we have talked about whether or not it is right or wrong for a state (and a legal system) to restrict who can and cannot get married, but for some reason we never once really talked about the broader issue that this article hits on: why should the state be able to regulate private social relationships between private citizens? Maybe I should have tried to write my paper for Jurisprudence focused on that angle of the discussion, but I suppose that it's too late at this point to just trash everything I've worked on for that paper throughout the semester and start over, oh well. Anyways, an interesting read nonetheless, enjoy!
