: National Eminent Domain BlogGreat Berger and Burger Tradition Continues
By Alan Ackerman
The mlive.com article about the Berger family restaurant expanding and surviving on M-84 despite the eminent domain proceeding is enlightening.
This is one of those rare circumstances where nearby land was available, allowing a four generation wonderful tradition to continue. This article, which is so favorable and clearly written by a public relations writer, is so accurate.
Representing the Berger family when they were condemned is one of those pleasant things that will long be remembered by this law firm.
"When my great-grandparents John and Mary first opened the doors, it was about a quarter-mile down the road," Bruce said. "It was right by Bergers Field, where a federation baseball team held its games. In 1933, when Prohibition ended, they started selling beer and, as far as I know, that's when it started evolving into a restaurant."
In the 1940s, John and Mary Berger passed the business to their son Norman and his wife, Bertha, who in 1969 turned it over to sons Ken and Curt and their wives Bonnie and Jan.
Bruce went into a partnership with his uncle Curt after his father, Ken, died in 1987, and he took full ownership in 2005.
