: The GavelElection 2010: $3.2 Million Spent in AL
By Peter Hardin
Alabama, home for the nation’s costliest state Supreme Court campaigns, continues to make headlines in 2010 for big-spending races.
Three seats are open on the state’s highest court, and combined spending has passed $3.2 million, according to a Birmingham News article that also provides a breakdown of the sums.
There were new election developments or election recaps in a number of states nationwide:
- OHIO: There are two contested seats on the Ohio Supreme Court ballot, and Republicans hope to continue a winning streak that has seen no Democrat elected to the high bench for a decade, according to a Toledo Blade article.
- TEXAS: “‘Conservative’ label highlights races for Texas Supreme Court,” declared the headline for a Dallas Morning News article.
- MINNESOTA: A race for a judicial seat in Stillwater features 24 candidates and could figure prominently into debate in the next state legislative session over a proposal to change the way judges are selected, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
- KENTUCKY: A federal appeals court ruling (see Gavel Grab) has eased fundraising for judicial candidates, but its full effect remains unclear, according to a Cincinnati Enquirer blog post.
