National Education Campaign on Crib Safety

By Chrissie Cole

ADVERTISEMENTS

"Safe Sleep for Babies," is a new crib safety video is a coordinated effort released by CPSC and three child safety organizations. The video intends to help new parents avoid entrapment, suffocation and strangulation risks in sleeping environments.

From the CPSC News Release:

CPSC is collaborating with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Keeping Babies Safe (KBS), New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, and renowned journalist and mom Joan Lunden to educate new and expectant parents and caregivers on crib safety while they are at the hospital or visiting their pediatrician's office. The video (transcript) demonstrates how to keep babies safe and sound in cribs, bassinets and play yards.

This effort is part of the CPSC's Safe Sleep Initiative, aimed at reducing deaths and injuries associated with unsafe sleep environments. The agency is also developing new crib standards, warnings about drop-side cribs and taking other safety measures.

The video urges parents and caregivers to follow the following crib safety tips:

Infants should be placed on their backs to sleep

Crib mattresses should be firm and tight-fitting

Extra padding, pillows or blankets should never be used below baby

Thick comforters and pillows should be removed from the crib

Positioning devices should not be used

Regularly check cribs for loose and missing parts

Do not fix a broken crib or playpen

Cribs should be placed away from windows and window cords to avoid fall and strangulation hazards.
