: New York Supreme Court Criminal Term LibraryWaxman Panel to Review Federal Juvenile Crime Grants
By David Badertscher, PLL
Source: Crime and Justice News, March 24, 2008.
"Grants from the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention are under review by the House Oversight Committee chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA). Waxman asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to provide by April 4 documents on the agency's grantmaking procedures. He cited an article in Youth Today (summarized in Crime & Justice News late last year) that some OJJDP grants were 'awarded in a noncompetitive manner, in some cases with highly ranked applicants rejected in favor of lower ranked competitors.' Waxman mentioned $500,000 to the World Golf Foundation, whose grant proposal was scored lower than that of 38 other applicants in a technical review."
"Among the items sought by Waxman's panel are all communications to or from OJJDP Administrator J. Robert Flores relating to all grants considered for awards in Fiscal Year 2007, and overall OJDDP and Justice Department policies on grants. The committee asked for a briefing on the issue by the end of this week. The review was requested by Rep. Tim Walz (D- MN)."
