: Legal Pad | LAJudge's 'tough love' approach lands her in hot water with Judicial Performance Commission
By Richard Binder
The State Commission on Judicial Performance said last Thursday that it will be investigating potential misconduct by San Diego County Superior Court Judge DeAnn M. Salcido. She is facing scrutiny for three dozen allegedly mocking, rude and slightly off-color comments from the bench.
Also, the commission claims that Salcido allowed her courtroom proceedings to be videotaped as part of her bid to become the focus of a reality television program.
Among her alleged offenses, Salcido is said to have mocked a criminal defendant who said he wanted to enlist in the military, as well as a woman in another case for having questionable taste in men because of her friendship with the defendant, who was wearing a Raiders shirt.
The judge released a statement last week in which she stressed her "use of humor and a 'tough love' approach in getting through to the criminal defendants."
Salcido, appointed by Gray Davis in 2002, was reelected this year by 59 percent of the vote.
