: Ross-Blakley Law Library BlogBanned Books Week
By Mariko
Banned books week is a celebration not only of all of the books that parents, patrons, school boards, governments and others have banned or attempted to ban from schools, from curriculums, from libraries, from bookstores, or even from owning in personal collections, but of our First Amendment rights. In celebrating Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson’s And Tango Makes Three, and Voltaire’s Candide among many others, we are recognizing a right to look at the world from different perspectives, a right to speak in ways that others may consider offensive or crude, a right to different views and religions and backgrounds.
