Georgia Inmate Attempts Suicide Hours Before Execution - UPDATED

Update -- AP reports, "Stay of Execution Granted for Brandon Rhode," via WSAV-TV. The Georgia Supreme Court has delayed the execution of a condemned man who attempted to commit suicide hours before he was to be put to death.The court's order Tuesday delays the execution of Brandon Joseph Rhode until Thursday at 2 p.m. to give the 31-year-old a chance to consult with his attorneys and to file a new mental competency challenge. Christian Boone posts, "Execution delayed for death row inmate who attempted suicide," at the Journal-Constitution. Rhode's attorney, Brian Kammer, filed a motion for an emergency stay after learning of his client's suicide attempt, arguing "Mr. Rhode is incompetent to be executed and his execution would violate the Eighth Amendment...continue to full post
