: Legal Ethics ForumLegal Ethics Items (September 20, 2010)
- Statesman (Tx): Even a commercial litigator may have to run from being labeled a "trial lawyer" when running for office.
- Clarion Ledger: Mississippi's high court is considering a proposal -- not popular with all lawyers -- requiring twenty hours of pro bono work each year.
- H/T: Legal Profession Blog. Ron Rotunda will give the Miller-Becker lecture, sponsored by Akron's Center for Professional Responsibility.
- Times Record (Fort Smith): The Van Buren city attorney was was fined and reprimanded for his private practice in bankruptcy court.
- Salt Lake City Tribune: a proposal to strengthen rule 8.2 and suggesting that lawyers had a duty to defend the judiciary has apparently died, due in part to opposition by lawyers who argued that the rule would infringe their free speech rights.
- Shipe v. Hunter. The Supreme Court of Virginia held that (1) non-lawyers not representing themselves and (2) lawyers licensed elsewhere cannot sign pleadings in state court.
- "Is it ethical?" The ABA has opined that using recordings of bird calls to lure birds where they can be photographed is to be done sparingly if at all. (Yes, it's a very different ABA they're discussing at that site, but it did turn up in my google alert.)
