Officials eye asbestos at courthouse

Usable space at the Columbus County Courthouse just shrank. Following a survey and testing of asbestos in the nearly 100-year-old building's walls, flooring and ceiling tiles, a handful of court employees' offices will be relocated due to potentially friable (apt to crumble) asbestos detected in the bookkeeping department.
The area in question has gray ceiling tiles with pinholes containing 4 percent asbestos or airborne asbestos-containing material (ACM) covering half of the room, according to an asbestos identification survey conducted by Quality Environmental on Aug. 25 and published this week.
No One Exposed
'We're moving just three people. It's not really an emergency move,' Columbus County Maintenance Director Tony Soles said. 'In the spirit of being proactive, we are moving these employees. Our goal is to do what we can to make sure no one is exposed.
'Most of it is in the floor and underneath the carpet with very little potential to be disturbed,' Soles said of asbestos throughout the courthouse.
