Today's Quote: Take that Cart and Horse Out for a Test Drive

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
It would be great if the law schools seemed to care ? if they insisted that prospective students work as paralegals for a while and make sure they know what they?re getting into. But law schools are money-making concerns and they?re raking in cash the way things are. They?re not about to start telling the truth about their massive profits on law student tuition or the feeble job market. As they see it, that?s not their problem. ~ Will Meyerhofer, in a guest post at Above the Law, "The Cart and the Horse," discusses the problems facing people who go to law school without researching the job market for lawyers, or making any effort to find out if they even like the law.

The way I see it, it's kind of our problem, too, when we end up working with young associates who are trapped in the profession by crushing student loan debt and hate their jobs - and us.

It's also not a bad idea for prospective paralegal students to work in a law office for a while, even if it's as a word processor, file clerk or runner - to make sure they know what they're getting into.
