Capital Punishment and Our Common Values: The European View

That's the title of commentary posted by Christian Prosl, Austria's ambassador to the United States.  It's in the Hill, the DC political paper.  LINKIt is generally assumed the United States and the European Union share the same values. No important speech on both sides of the Atlantic can do without a reference to those common values such as democracy, adherence to the rule of law and human rights. Therefore, it is even more distressing that capital punishment continues to be imposed in the United States. Since its reintroduction in 1976, more than 1,200 people have been executed. According to opinion polls the mainstream of Americans still favors the death penalty.
