Steward leaves ex-sheriff Carona's legal team

Federal law expert H. Dean Steward left the legal team of indicted former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona, the Orange County Register reported.

Carona told the newspaper they couldn't afford to keep Steward on the team. Steward has represented Carona since 2005.

While Carona is being represented now by Jones Day lawyers who've agreed to work for free, he still is paying for other costs related to his legal defense and the Caronas are paying for attorney David Wiechert to represent Deborah Carona, the O.C. Register reported.

Mike Carona faces federal corruption charges alleging he and others used the sheriff's office for their personal gain, taking in about $700,000 in bribes and kickbacks. Deborah and Mike Carona as well as his longtime mistress, Newport Beach attorney Debra Hoffman plead not guilty.

Their trial begins on June 10.
