Governor names Cantil-Sakauye to be next chief justice

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Governor Schwarzenegger has nominated 3rd District Court of Appeal Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye to be chief justice of the California Supreme Court.  This would make her the first Filipina American to lead the state's judiciary and also give the California Supreme Court a female majority for the first time in its history.

Cantil-Sakauye is a former prosecutor and Sacramento Superior Court judge. She was appointed to the Sacramento Municipal Court by former Gov. George Deukmejian. Chief Justice Ronald M. George, who is retiring in January, recently appointed Cantil-Sakauye to head a Judicial Council committee charged with overseeing the operations of the Administrative Office of the Courts, which runs the court system.

A graduate of UC Davis School of Law, Cantil-Sakauye would start a 12-year term in January if approved by a three-member commission and by voters in November. She told The Sacramento Bee in 2005, "One of my favorite sayings is, 'There is no one truth, only versions of it.'"
