Baby Becca: Month 2

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

Dear Becca,

You're two months old, and one sweet cuddly girl. In the last month our lives have felt a lot more manageable, largely because you now sleep five or six hours in a row every night, and you have fewer inexplicable screaming fits. You hold your head up almost all the time, aside from the occasional bonking into one of our collarbones. You listen carefully while we read you stories in funny voices while you hang out on your Boppy. Your little hands are finally uncurling, and you seem more relaxed about being out in this big world.

The best part, though, is the smiles. You crack big toothless ones every day, at yourself in the bedroom mirror, at Daddy's Grover voice, and especially at your best friends, the animals on your jungle mobile. (We call the mobile TP, for "Third Parent," because you sometimes like it better than us and a wind-up cycle buys us valuable bathroom or shoe-tying time.) Sometimes you even contribute to the conversation with a "Aah!" or an "Ooow!" It feels great to know that you know who we are and that we can make you happy.

It's still not easy - you get poop on your clothes and spit-up down my shirt several times a week, and I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to write the three papers I need to graduate, since I've only now gotten on top of my classes and clinical work. But we'll make it to the end together. We went to lunch with some of the moms in our class last week, and one of them saw you watching me from your carseat and said, "She only has eyes for Mommy." I brushed it off because at that point you were constantly looking to your right side, and that's where I was sitting. A little later, though, you were on my lap and I was to your left, and the mom pointed out that you were once again looking up at my face, calm and content. I'm so glad you feel good when we're together. I know I do.

Love,
Mommy
