A tribute to Dr. Fred Plum

Dr. Fred Plum, a prominent neurologist whose pioneering research advanced the understanding of coma and unconsciousness past away late last week. 

Dr. Plum's ground breaking research on unconsciousness improved medical understanding of coma and influenced the medical profession in developing criteria to distinguish between the various stages of unconsciousness: coma, the vegetative state, the locked in syndrome and the minimally conscious state.  Today, medical reserach has shown that iupwards of  40 percent of individuals previously thought to be in the persistent vegetative state do, in fact have the ability to process information and have some degree of cognitive awareness.
