Sestak & Romanoff: The Hunt for Non-Job Jobs Continues

By Phil

ADVERTISEMENTS

As my Impeachment category can attest, there has been much to be made — and certainly well-deserved — about alleged job offers (that were unpaid, as if somehow this makes a difference with the law) to PA Democratic Primary candidate Joe Sestak. And, fortunately, the GOP continues to ask for all manner of documentation surrounding the Sestak allegations. What’s more, even Press Secretary Robert Gibbs admits that the alleged job offered to Mr. Sestak wasn’t on an intelligence board (and we’re probably happy about that!).

Colorado U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff

The scandal deepens and now includes former Colorado House Speaker and Democrat Andrew Romanoff. Via HotAir.com, the story was first reported by DenverPost.com back in February of 2008 and was originally denied by the Administration (HotAir emphasis):

?Mr. Romanoff was never offered a position within the administration,? said White House spokesman Adam Abrams.

Now, the Administration is admitting it (via AP/WashingtonPost.com):

Administration officials dangled the possibility of a job for former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff last year in hopes he would forego a challenge to Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, his rival in an Aug. 10 primary, administration officials said Wednesday.

These officials declined to specify the job that was floated or the name of the administration official who approached Romanoff, and said no formal offer was ever made. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not cleared to discuss private conversations?

Unlike Sestak, Romanoff has ducked questions on the subject, and it was not clear how long his discussions with administration officials lasted.

HotAir analyzes the situation best (emphasis theirs):

The Denver Post was strikingly silent about the job offer after their big scoop last year ? until today, when the editorial page declared that it was time for both sides to come clean. (Romanoff told them ?unequivocally? that he never received any offer, so now we know he?s a liar too.) Presumably the ?administration officials? who ?fessed up this afternoon were worried about Colorado media revisiting the story in the wake of l?affaire Sestak and decided to try to short-circuit the coverage by admitting what happened. Except that ? by refusing to say what job he was offered and who offered it, they?re going to kick off all sorts of new speculation. If you?re going to come clean, come clean.

Dare we ask the question-of-questions, currently being begged by both of these scandals?

The million-dollar exit question: How many more Sestaks and Romanoffs are there?

My own analysis:

The lying on the part of all parties — the Administration and the candidates — will continue until adequate enforcement will stop the lying in its tracks. This will not occur until the majority changes hands, at least in the House. Fortunately for those of us who enjoy brewing Tea, it’s far more likely for this to occur in the lower chamber than the upper in 2010 — though it would be a pleasant surprise for both to flip.

See the Impeachment category for general background on this story.
