Shame and Embarrassment and Humiliation and Bankruptcy in Arizona

By Joseph McDaniel, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
I've been practicing bankruptcy law for about thirty years now, and it still surprises me when smart, capable, well-educated people break down sobbing in my office as we discuss bankruptcy options and non-bankruptcy options in Arizona.

I keep a big box of tissues on my desk.

And most people eventually get through the emotional barriers that make it hard for them to think clearly about bankruptcy as a path to a fresh start.

Recently on very nice lady said she didn't want her mother to find out about the filing. She said her mother would say, "I raised you better than that!"

I suggested that her mother might well be unhappy with her decision, but that her mother would still love her.

Might guilt her a little at Thanksgiving Dinner, but she'd still love her, and she'd get over it.

After all, mom always has the option of paying off all the debt.

But that's not a practical solution in most cases, of course.
