Paralegal and Legal Assistant Have Creativity in Common

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
Indiana paralegal Kay Bozarth and Canadian legal assistant Amanda Ciring share the creativity gene - and appear to have unlimited energy to spare after work.

Bozarth is a talented seamstress whose quilt, Lavender Dreams, was featured last November in the sewing magazine, Creative Expressions. In addition to working as a paralegal, she teaches sewing classes at a local quilt shop and out of her home. She is employed by an understanding attorney who "lets her take time off for her sewing classes and projects."

Bozarth told the Terre Haute Tribune Star, "I enjoy the pleasure of seeing something finished. The accomplishment. And I thrive on challenges." These are traits necessary to be a successful paralegal as well - and anyone who can make a quilt with a million stitches is bound to be good at getting hard projects finished.

Ciring, proud owner of pugs, MeiMei and Miko, started a local group, Calgary Pugsters Meetup, for area pug lovers in 2006 (which has grown to over 300 members) and then launched an online pet shop, The Pawhaus Pet Boutique for pets with special needs.

Of the 1,000 products Pawhaus carries, two of the most popular are Silly Little Sock Monkeys, a squeaker toy made by an artist in Calgary, and Molly Mutt pet bed duvet covers. Made in California, the covers can be stuffed with old blankets, towels and clothes -- great for dogs with separation anxiety because they smell like their owners.

Ciring saw a need and after carefully doing the market research, launched a business to fill that need. Doing in-depth research and solving problems are critical paralegal skills.

You may be able to tell a lot about a paralegal or a legal assistant by his or her hobbies. Where do you channel your energy, creativity and love of a good challenge when you're not at work?
