Unlisted Sulfites Cause Recalls

By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck

ADVERTISEMENTS
Routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors and subsequent analysis by state food laboratory personnel have led to two separate recalls.
Northern Food I/E, based in Hicksville, NY, Friday recalled its 100 gram packages of Havista brand "white fungus."  And Humel Trading Inc., based in Jamaica, NY, Friday recalled  Dried Pachyrhizus (Product of China).
Both products contain undeclared sulfites.  People who have sensitivity to sulfites risk serious and even life-threatening reactions if they consume either of these products.
The "white fungus" comes in 100 gram clear plastic bags with a multi-color label on the front and a white label on the back.  The product is coded Best Before 09/10/2011.  The recalled Havista brand "white fungus" was distributed in New York and New Jersey retail stores.
Some asthmatics will experience severe reactions to as little as 10 milligrams of sulfites.  NY's analysis of the Havista brand of "white fungus" revealed it contained 124 milligrams per serving.
Consumers are urged to return the "white fungus" to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Questions about the "white fungus" recall should be made to (516) 942-9070.
Analysis of the Humel Foods brand Dried Pachryrhizus found it contained 139 milligrams per serving.  Consumers who purchased that product can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Questions should be directed to Humel at (718) 995-6818.
No severe reactions have yet been reported involving the recalled products.
