Highway Construction Worker Hit on Interstate 85 near Archdale, North Carolina

By Pierce Egerton

ADVERTISEMENTS

In North Carolina in 2008, there were five work-related deaths at road construction sites and 21 fatal traffic accidents in a highway construction zone. It should come as no surprise that highway construction is one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States.

According to a study prepared by the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America, 73% of deaths on-the-job happened at road and highway construction sites, and the greatest percentage of those deaths involve pedestrian workers struck by vehicular traffic.

Governor Beverly Perdue declared April 'Work Zone Safety Awareness Month' North Carolina, but sadly, at least one motorist did not heed the alert. Police report that Annasue Stanley Lamphier, 40, of Grover, North Carolina was driving while impaired when she struck a 23-year-old construction worker on Interstate 85 on April 6, 2010.

Lamphier drove her Chevrolet van into the highway median, then came back onto the highway and crossed two lanes of traffic before hitting a tractor trailer. Her vehicle moved back towards the left where it struck the construction worker, reports news14.com.

The worker was painting lines along the highway when Lamphier hit him. He was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where he was listed in serious condition as of the afternoon of April 7, 2010.

Police suspect Lamphier's impairment was not due to alcohol but another drug that remains undisclosed. She has been charged with driving while impaired, failure to maintain a lane and careless and reckless driving. If, God forbid, the accident results in the construction worker's death, Lamphier will surely face grave consequences.

Our community hopes that the young man who was seriously injured while working on one of our nation's public highways will survive and recuperate fully and quickly. With April 19-23, 2010 as National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, the gravity of the situation takes on another message.
