DRIC Plan and Eminent Domain

By Alan Ackerman

ADVERTISEMENTS

"While the DRIC continues to hold great news conferences, they forget to tell what they lack to accomplish their goal," Stamper said.

"DRIC claims they are ready to go," he said. "They didn't tell you that they own no land in Detroit and that they have to condemn 250 homes, 50 businesses and multiple nonprofits and churches."

It is amazing that the Detroit International Bridge Company President, Dan Stamper, speaking on behalf of the Maroun interests and the privately owned bridge, continues his attack on DRIC with a foolish analysis.  To assume that MDOT cannot obtain properties by their voluntary acquisition or eminent domain (condemnation) proceedings simply has no merit.  Nothing is of greater public use than building a bridge, which is a basic transportation purpose contemplated by the Constitution as a delegation to the Michigan Department of Transportation to perform.

The truth is that approximately 50 business owners and 250 home owners and other institutional owners are being damaged on a daily basis while the Detroit International Bridge Company stops the process from moving forward.
