: Dispatches from the Culture WarsFree Speech at MSU
By Ed Brayton
Michigan State University is in the middle of a major controversy over the limits of free speech on campus, a controversy that has been repeated at other universities for decades. The student leadership, Associated Students of MSU, has called on the university to adopt a hate speech code in the wake of one student group, the MSU chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, bringing in several repugnant speakers to campus to speak.
The university spokesman, Terry Denbow, has said that the university will not pass such a speech code. This week the president of the university, Lou Anna K. Simon, released a public statement that makes a fairly strong case for maximizing free speech on campus. I'm going to reproduce the text of that statement below the fold, then have some comments about it.
