Allegedly Intoxicated Officer Starts Fight, Suit Claims

Two Philadelphia men have filed a lawsuit against the city and the police department, alleging that an intoxicated off-duty police officer beat them up and unjustly arrested them. Richard Checchia and Stanley Dawejko claim in their lawsuit that an “apparently” intoxicated Officer Thomas Schaffling started a fight with them. They say that during the fight Schaffling fired his gun, hitting one of the men in the arm. The lawsuit also accuses the department of attempting to cover the incident up.
