: New York City Personal Injury LawyerNYPD Cop Hit by DWI Driver While Pulling Over a DWI Driver
By Paul Napoli
A drunk driver hit an officer of the New York Police Department as he pulled over another driver suspected of driving drunk, reports the New York Daily News.
The accident happened about 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The NYPD officer stopped a 2008 Honda driven by 40-year-old Hector Herrera Espinosa, of Maryland, after the car was seen weaving in and out of traffic erratically.
As the officer approached Espinosa's vehicle, a 2005 Honda driven by Juan Diaz, 32, of Queens, swerved to avoid the cop car, hit a yellow cab and spun out of control, striking the officer.
An ambulance transported the officer to Bellevue Hospital, where he received treatment for two broken legs. Police have not released the name of the officer, sources told the New York Post he is a 27-year-old who has been on the force 5 and one half years and assigned to the Manhattan South Task Force.
Both Espinosa and Diaz failed breathalyzer tests and police charged them with driving while intoxicated.
