McCoy weighs in on AOC report

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Okay, so maybe things are as bad as we thought.

Los Angeles Superior Court Presiding Judge Charles "Tim" McCoy Jr. wrote a letter on March 31 to the Judicial Council of California, saying that the recent AOC report downplaying the fiscal crisis facing the court system in L.A. was based on "unfounded optimism" and "erroneous" calculations.

In that letter, McCoy disputes the AOC's conclusions that court officials underestimated the projected cost savings attributed to attrition and layoffs. McCoy says labor agreements and seniority requirements play into the way the court lays off employees, and thevast majority of employees losing their jobs would be at salaries below the median of $64,761.

"We're in a very real, deep and long lasting budget crisis that cannot be ignored, and we can't put off 'til tomorrow what's best done today. Their analysis hinges on a philosophy to do just that," McCoy told The National Law Journal.
